The Tripura Transport Department has taken a decisive step to address the growing traffic congestion in Agartala, the capital city. Effective from July 10th, 2024, the department has issued a ban on the registration of all types of three-wheeler passenger and goods vehicles within the Agartala Municipal Corporation area of West Tripura District. This measure is aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility and reducing the burden on the city’s already crowded roads.
The ban encompasses a wide range of three-wheelers, including e-rickshaws, e-carts, e-autos, petrol autos, diesel autos, CNG autos, and vehicles running on bio-fuels such as methanol and ethanol. The government’s notification emphasizes the importance of public safety and convenience, stating that the ban is necessary to manage traffic congestion and encourage the adoption of alternative transportation systems.
The Transport Department intends to regularly review the impact of this restriction on urban mobility in Agartala. They reserve the right to modify or amend the notification based on the evaluation of its effectiveness. Currently, there are 23,474 three-wheelers and 4259 e-rickshaws registered with the transport department in West Tripura District, with 70 of these vehicles operating within the capital city itself. This ban represents a significant effort to reshape the transportation landscape of Agartala and prioritize the well-being of its residents.
