A tragic incident unfolded in Tripura’s Gomati district where a school teacher was brutally beaten to death by a mob after being accused of molesting a minor girl student. Despite an FIR being lodged, no arrests have been made so far, raising concerns about the handling of the case.
The teacher, who was in his 40s and a reputed English teacher, was reportedly attacked by the mob following allegations of molesting a minor girl during a private tuition session in Udaipur. The incident took place on Thursday, where local residents severely assaulted the government school teacher.
According to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law & Order) Ananta Das, the mob took the teacher to the RK Pur police station on the night of August 8, in the presence of his wife, and filed a molestation case against him. The accused was initially taken to a local health centre on doctor’s advice and was subsequently arrested on Friday. However, he secured bail from a local court later that day.
Following his release, the teacher reportedly fell ill and was admitted to the GBP Hospital in Agartala. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment on Saturday. The police have initiated an investigation into the case.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from local authorities. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, the local MLA, denounced the attack, stating that while there may be allegations against anyone, taking the law into one’s own hands is a crime. He also highlighted that Chief Minister Manik Saha had been informed of the teacher’s murder and that the police would take legal action against those involved.
Separately, the Tripura police announced on Sunday that they would be implementing restrictions on agitations and rallies in West Tripura district, including Agartala, citing the volatile situation in Bangladesh as a reason for maintaining law and order. The Superintendent of Police (SP), West Tripura, Kiran Kumar, stated that the situation in Bangladesh is unstable and that the vigil on the international border has been heightened. The Tripura State Rifles (TSR) is conducting joint patrols with the BSF troops along the border to prevent any intrusion attempts from across the border.
