Alleged Attack on Truck Drivers Transporting Cattle Sparks Investigation
In a recent incident, two individuals transporting cattle in a goods vehicle were reportedly attacked and apprehended by individuals purportedly associated with Hindu right-wing groups. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening near Pune-Bengaluru National Highway, is currently being investigated by law enforcement.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohan Jagadish, the truck was intercepted by a group of approximately 10-12 people, who forcibly removed the drivers and subjected them to aggression. One of the drivers, Umar Moyuddin, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) hospital.
The drivers claimed that they were not directly involved in the cow slaughtering business and had only been hired to transport the animals. However, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagadish Shettar urged the police to file a case under the Anti-Cow Slaughtering Act, alleging that the incident was politically motivated.
Responding to Shettar’s remarks, Belagavi district Congress chief Vinay Navalgatti asserted that such actions were politically driven to sway Hindu votes and would be ineffective.
The authorities have relocated the cattle to a gow shala (cattle shed) and recovered the truck. The investigation remains ongoing, and a formal complaint against the attackers is expected to be filed once the injured driver provides further details.
