The Georgia appeals court has granted former President Trump’s appeal in the case against Georgia prosecutor Fani Willis. Trump and several co-defendants, including Mark Meadows, Rudy Giuliani, Cathy Latham, and Michael Roman, have filed notices of appeal to disqualify Willis from the case, alleging that she had an inappropriate affair with special counsel Nathan Wade and that she financially benefited from the relationship.
Last week, the appeals court announced that it would hear the case, which alleges that Willis should be disqualified due to an “improper” affair with Wade. The co-defendants claim that Willis and Wade were romantically involved prior to his hiring and that she financially benefited from the relationship.
Judge Scott McAfee ruled in March that Wade had to be removed to keep Willis from disqualification in the sweeping racketeering case against Trump. McAfee allowed the defense to appeal his ruling, and the appeals court announced last week that it will hear the defense’s case to have Willis disqualified. The defense had presented evidence at a two-day hearing in February in an attempt to establish a conflict of interest for Willis.
The Fulton County District Attorney’s office has denied the allegations of misconduct and has stated that the expenses incurred by Willis and Wade were evenly split and that there was no financial gain for Willis in the relationship.
The earliest the Court of Appeals could hear this appeal would be August, and the latest would be spring 2025.
