Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has confirmed that some of their internal communications were hacked, raising concerns about potential foreign interference in the 2024 election. The campaign alleges that Iran is responsible for the hack, citing a recent report from Microsoft that found Iranian hackers had breached the account of a high-ranking campaign official in June 2024. This alleged hacking incident coincides with reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump.
Steven Cheung, the communications director for the Trump campaign, stated that the documents obtained illegally from foreign sources were intended to interfere with the election and sow chaos within the democratic process. He added that any media outlet reprinting the hacked documents would be aiding America’s enemies.
The hacked documents, including a dossier on Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, were reportedly sent to the liberal media outlet Politico. The Trump campaign has not confirmed whether they have contacted law enforcement about the hacking incident. Politico has yet to respond to requests for comment on whether they used any of the hacked material in their reporting.
The incident has sparked concerns about the security of political campaigns and the vulnerability of the 2024 election to foreign interference. It remains unclear whether the alleged hacking is connected to the reported assassination plot against President Trump. The Trump campaign has vowed to investigate the matter further and take appropriate action to protect their communications.
