The Republican Senate race in Nevada has taken a dramatic turn, escalating into a heated contest for the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
Dr. Jeffrey Gunter, a former Trump ambassador to Iceland, has emerged as a formidable challenger to Sam Brown, the national party-backed candidate. Gunter has positioned himself as the “MAGA guy” and a staunch supporter of Trump, dubbing Brown “Scam Brown” and accusing him of being a “Never Trumper.”
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Gunter emphasized his unwavering commitment to Trump: “Nevada voters deserve truthful, honest, straightforward politicians… I’m the MAGA guy. I’m 110% pro-Donald Trump. That’s who I am.” He criticized Brown for his perceived allegiance to other Republican figures, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.
In contrast, Brown has avoided direct confrontations with Gunter while focusing his attacks on incumbent Democratic Senator Jacky Rosen and President Biden. He has attempted to distance himself from the Trump endorsement race, stating, “I am a pro-America First candidate, and I am extremely conservative. What other candidates do is just an indication of how desperate people are.”
Despite largely ignoring Gunter’s attacks, Brown has made efforts to secure Trump’s endorsement. He recently visited Mar-a-Lago to seek the former president’s support and has consistently praised Trump’s “America First vision.” However, it remains unclear why Trump has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race.
Both Gunter and Brown believe they are the only candidates who can unseat Rosen and flip the seat for Republicans. Rosen’s campaign, however, maintains that the race is far from over. Spokesperson Johanna Warshaw stated, “Jacky Rosen has been ranked one of the most bipartisan and effective senators in the nation because of her proven record of political independence and her work across party lines to deliver for Nevada.”
With the primary set for June 11th, the Nevada Senate race promises to be a closely watched contest, with the potential for Trump’s endorsement to play a significant role in determining the outcome.
