With less than two weeks until Election Day, a new poll suggests a potential shift in voting patterns among young minority voters. The GenForward poll, conducted by the University of Chicago, reveals that former President Donald Trump has gained significant traction among young Black and Latino men, particularly concerning economic issues and immigration.
The poll, which surveyed 2,359 eligible voters aged 18 to 40, found that 26% of Black men within that age range would vote for Trump, a substantial increase from the 2020 election. Additionally, 44% of young Latino men said they would support Trump, compared to approximately 38% in 2020.
Despite this upward trend for Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris remains the overall frontrunner in the poll, leading Trump by a margin of 47% to 35%. Harris enjoys strong support among women of color, with a majority of Black (63%), Asian American and Pacific Islander (60%), and Latina (55%) women indicating their support for her over Trump.
While Harris has focused on economic outreach to Black men, proposing initiatives like small business loans for Black-owned businesses and marijuana legalization, Trump has strategically leveraged endorsements from Black celebrities and athletes, including rapper Trick Trick and former NFL players Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell.
The poll highlights the dynamic nature of the 2024 presidential race, particularly within key demographic groups. It underscores the significance of economic and social issues in influencing voter choices, particularly among younger generations. Both candidates continue to engage in extensive outreach efforts, targeting minority voters in an attempt to secure their crucial support before the election.
