Thousands of people lined the streets of Grand Rapids, Michigan, to show their support for former President Donald Trump at his first rally since a would-be assassin tried, but failed, to take his life.
The event, held at the Van Andel Arena, was a joint campaign rally for Trump and his vice presidential nominee, JD Vance. It marked their first appearance together as running mates since accepting their respective nominations at the Republican National Convention (RNC).
Vance took to the stage first, addressing the crowd with a sense of awe and disbelief. “I find it hard to believe that a week ago an assassin tried to take Donald Trump’s life, and now we have this crowd in Michigan to welcome him back,” he said.
He then launched into a series of attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, questioning her accomplishments. “I’ve served in the United States Marine Corps… What the hell have you done?” Vance asked, highlighting his own military service. He continued to criticize Harris’s record, claiming she had “done nothing other than collect a check from her political offices.”
Vance also spoke about his upbringing and the influence of his grandmother, whom he affectionately calls “Mamaw.” His speech echoed themes of personal responsibility and family values that have resonated with Republican voters.
Harris had previously criticized Vance’s speech at the RNC, saying it was “compelling” but not the full story. She pointed to “Project 2025,” a blueprint for a second Trump term, which she described as “extreme” and “divisive.”
Following Vance’s speech, Trump took the stage, outlining his vision for the country and addressing key issues such as the economy, border security, and the fentanyl crisis. He also spoke about the attempted assassination, thanking the law enforcement officers who apprehended the suspect and emphasizing the resilience of his supporters.
The rally served as a powerful reminder of Trump’s enduring popularity among his base, despite the recent assassination attempt. It also highlighted the key issues that will likely dominate the 2024 presidential election campaign, particularly the economic challenges facing the nation and the ongoing debate over immigration and border security.
Michigan is considered a critical battleground state in the upcoming election, and its outcome could have a significant impact on the presidential race. The Trump-Vance rally demonstrated the high stakes involved in this contest, as both candidates seek to energize their supporters and appeal to undecided voters in the months leading up to Election Day.
