Trump Hosts Former Japanese Prime Minister Aso Amidst Criminal Trial

Former President Donald Trump hosted former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso at Trump Tower in New York on Tuesday, continuing a trend of meetings with foreign leaders amidst his ongoing criminal trial. Aso, who is currently vice president of the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party, served as deputy prime minister and finance minister under former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, with whom Trump shared a close relationship. The meeting comes just days after Trump met with Polish President Andrzej Duda and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron at the same location. Earlier this month, Trump also welcomed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to his Mar-a-Lago resort. These meetings highlight the global interest in Trump’s potential return to the White House and underscore concerns about his protectionist trade policies. In a statement, Trump’s spokesperson Brian Hughes emphasized the support of world leaders for Trump, stating that they “know that with President Trump we had a safer, more peaceful world.” He added that when Trump is re-elected, “the world will be more secure and America will be more prosperous.” In recent weeks, Trump has frequently expressed his frustration with the rising value of the US dollar against the Japanese yen, threatening to impose broad new tariffs if he wins a second term. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden recently hosted current Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House for talks and a state dinner, during which the leaders announced plans to upgrade US-Japan military relations.
