Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers have filed a motion for a delay in his classified documents case, citing the lack of a secure location in New York for them to discuss top-secret documents. The lawyers, Emil Bove and Todd Blanche, are also representing Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush money trial.
In their submission, Trump’s lawyers argued that there is no secure room or Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) available in New York where they can prepare for the classified documents case. They stated that SCIFs are essential for discussing such sensitive materials due to their anti-bugging and anti-hacking technology.
Trump’s lawyers emphasized that they cannot adequately prepare for the classified documents case while simultaneously representing him in the Stormy Daniels trial. They highlighted the substantial motion practice that has occurred in the Florida court overseeing the classified documents case.
However, the prosecution objects to the delay, arguing that Trump’s lawyers have had sufficient time to prepare for the Stormy Daniels case. The Special Counsel, Smith, noted that Trump will only be in trial four days a week in New York.
Trump’s lawyers rejected Smith’s suggestion that they could use another lawyer in Florida to handle the classified documents case. They maintained that Trump has the constitutional right to counsel of his choice.
The filing was submitted by Bove, Blanche, and a third Trump attorney, Chris Kise, in support of their motion for an adjournment of the deadlines in the classified documents case. The case is being overseen by Judge Cannon, a Trump appointee. Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and obstructing federal officials’ attempts to retrieve them.
