The long-awaited interview between Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk began with a 40-minute delay due to technical difficulties. Moments into the conversation, the Republican presidential candidate, running for the 2024 election, recounted the assassination attempt on his life during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13th. Musk initiated the topic, asking about the harrowing experience.
Trump, with a laugh, acknowledged the seriousness of the event, stating it was “not pleasant.” He then provided a detailed account of his experience, emphasizing the immediate understanding that he had been shot. “I knew immediately that it was a bullet. I knew immediately that it was at the ear,” Trump described.
The assassination attempt, which resulted in the death of one individual and critical injuries to two others, deeply affected Trump. He went on to share that the incident had solidified his belief in God. “Now, I’m more of a believer… For those people that don’t believe in God, I think we all have to start thinking about that,” he shared.
The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, fired approximately eight shots from a distance of 400 feet. Trump’s ear was injured in the attack. Crooks was killed by a Secret Service sniper immediately following the shootout.
Reflecting on the attack, Trump expressed amazement at his survival. “It was amazing that I happened to be turned just at that perfect angle.” He also mentioned his plans to return to Butler for another campaign event, stating that his last rally was abruptly ended by the shooting. With a touch of humor, he joked that he would begin his next speech with “As I was saying…”
Trump concluded by praising his supporters for their composure and lack of panic in the face of the chaotic situation. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering support, emphasizing that their calmness was a testament to their character and loyalty.
