A Siena College Poll conducted from April 15th to 17th surveyed likely New Yorkers to gain insights into their perspectives on the Trump trial and criminal charges. Among the respondents, 54% expressed their belief in the legitimacy of the trial, while 34% viewed it as a “witch hunt.” Notably, 77% of Democrat respondents and 44% of independents shared the view of legitimacy.
The poll results indicated that a majority of respondents (60%) are following the historic trial closely, with either “some attention” or a “great deal” of attention. Notably, the poll revealed that Trump still enjoys greater favorability among New York independents than both President Biden and Governor Kathy Hochul.
During the trial, prosecutors have unveiled new alleged crimes, including a charge of “conspiracy to promote or prevent election” against the former president. The charges against Trump stem from allegations of falsifying business records, including hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election.
The poll also highlighted a decline in President Biden’s favorability and job performance ratings among New York voters. Additionally, the poll captured the sentiment that 64% of respondents believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
This poll, conducted by Siena College, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
