In a stark warning about the potential dangers of a Trump presidency, a group of former Trump administration officials have publicly backed former Chief of Staff John Kelly’s accusations that the ex-president embodies fascist characteristics. This comes as Kelly has publicly stated that Trump would rule like a dictator and lacks understanding of the Constitution, according to a report by Politico.
In a letter exclusively provided to Politico, these former Trump officials, many of whom have been vocal critics of Trump for years, asserted that Kelly’s claims reflect the true nature of the former president. The letter poignantly states, “There are moments in history where it becomes necessary to put country over party. This is one of those moments.” Among the signatories are notable figures such as Elizabeth Neumann, former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security; Anthony Scaramucci, ex-White House Communications Director; Stephanie Grisham, former White House Press Secretary; and Sarah Matthews, former Deputy Press Secretary.
Kelly, in a recent interview with The New York Times, provided further evidence for his claims, stating that Trump made admiring statements about Adolf Hitler, expressed contempt for disabled veterans, and referred to fallen soldiers as “losers” and “suckers.” These claims were first reported by The Atlantic in 2020.
The letter from Trump’s former allies arrives as Kamala Harris is emphasizing the threat Trump poses to American democracy if re-elected. Harris and her campaign believe this message resonates with independent and Republican voters who are wary of Trump’s return to the White House. The letter’s release also coincides with additional Republican defections, including former Michigan Rep. Fred Upton and the GOP mayor of Waukesha, Wisconsin, located in the state’s largest Republican county.
Trump has vehemently denied Kelly’s accusations, resorting to personal attacks in a Truth Social post where he labeled Kelly a “lowlife” and “total degenerate.” Despite these denials, the increasing number of former Trump officials speaking out against his conduct raises serious concerns about his potential return to power and the implications for American democracy.
