After a week of intense jury selection, Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial begins in earnest today with opening statements from the prosecution and defense. The jury of 12 jurors and six alternates will hear evidence against the former president and his counter-arguments before deciding his fate.
Trump has spent the weekend complaining about the case on Truth Social and asserting his presidential immunity, which the Supreme Court will consider this Thursday. He canceled a planned rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, due to bad weather, while his wife, Melania Trump, participated in a fundraising event for a conservative LGBT+ group.
Meanwhile, the Federal Election Commission reported that legal fees had depleted three-quarters of the funds raised by the pro-Trump Save America PAC.
Other legal issues facing Trump include a hearing on Monday regarding the cancellation of his $175 million bond in the civil fraud trial ruling and the public filing of witness statements in the classified documents case.
