The City of Tshwane is mourning the loss of its former mayor, Dr. Murunwa Makwarela, who passed away on Tuesday morning. Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana confirmed the news, expressing sadness and conveying condolences to the family and residents. Makwarela’s death comes just a week after he appeared in court on charges of fraud related to his alleged insolvency status.
Makwarela, a Cope councillor, became mayor in February 2023 after the resignation of Randall Williams. He faced scrutiny due to his 2016 declaration of insolvency, which according to the law prohibits holding public office. Makwarela had presented a rehabilitation certificate, which was later disputed by the court.
Upon the revelation, Makwarela resigned, maintaining his innocence. The City of Tshwane subsequently opened a case against him, alleging fraud. Makwarela remained adamant that his resignation was not an admission of guilt.
Tshwane is in mourning as it remembers the contributions of Dr. Makwarela, a former speaker, mayor, and councillor. The city extends its deepest sympathies to his family and the community during this difficult time.
