Tsitsipas Parts Ways with Father as Coach After Canadian Open Loss

Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas has announced a significant change in his coaching setup, ending his collaboration with his father, Apostolos. The 25-year-old, currently ranked 11th in the world, revealed the decision on Friday, stating that he wants to maintain a purely father-son relationship with Apostolos going forward.

The decision follows a challenging performance at the Canadian Open, where Tsitsipas suffered a second-round defeat to former Japanese world number four Kei Nishikori. After the loss, Tsitsipas expressed dissatisfaction with his father’s coaching approach.

Despite the separation as coach, Apostolos will continue to travel with Tsitsipas, offering support and assistance in non-coaching roles. In his statement on X, Tsitsipas acknowledged the weight of the decision and the years of success they shared as coach and athlete.

Tsitsipas, a finalist in the 2023 Australian Open and 2021 French Open, stated that he is unsure who will fill the coaching role, leaving the decision for the future. He emphasized his trust in his father’s coaching abilities over the years, considering their partnership a success.

This announcement comes as Tsitsipas prepares for the upcoming US Open, following his quarterfinal appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he lost to eventual gold medalist Novak Djokovic.
