Two Andhra Athletes to Represent India at Paris Paralympics

Two talented athletes from Andhra Pradesh, cyclist Arshad Shaikh and rower K. Narayana, are set to make India proud at the Paris Paralympics later this month.

Arshad will be making his Paralympic debut in para cycling. He earned his spot on the Indian team by securing a silver medal in the men’s elite individual time trial C2 category at the Asian Road Para cycling championship. He also achieved a gold medal in the C2 category 15 km scratch final at the Asian Track Cycling Championship, showcasing his remarkable talent and dedication.

Narayana, a former Indian Army soldier, faced a life-changing event when he lost his left leg below the knee in a landmine blast in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite this adversity, he demonstrated unwavering resilience and exceptional skill, earning a silver medal in the PR3 mixed doubles sculls alongside Anita at the 2022 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.

The rower attributes his success to the unwavering support of the Army authorities, especially Col. Gaurav Datta, who introduced him to Para Games in 2016. Narayana initially pursued athletics (javelin) for two years before switching to rowing. His first international medal, won at the 2019 Poland championship, provided a significant boost to his confidence and served as a turning point in his journey.

“We are incredibly proud of our athletes and their achievements. The addition of three new sports to our Paralympic roster highlights the increasing depth and talent within our Paralympic community. We are confident that our athletes will continue to inspire and excel on the world stage,” said Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India, in a statement.

The achievements of Arshad and Narayana are a testament to their unwavering spirit, resilience, and dedication to their chosen sports. Their participation in the Paris Paralympics serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the incredible potential that lies within each individual, regardless of their challenges. As they represent India on the global stage, they are sure to bring pride and inspire millions across the country.
