Two Premier League footballers, both 19 years old and playing for the same club, were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of rape and assault, according to The Sun. One of the players was initially interviewed by police at the club’s stadium on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. He was released from the stadium but later formally arrested and spent the night in a police cell before being questioned by detectives under caution. The following day, his teammate was also arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape. The police have since confirmed that the pair have been released on bail. A spokesperson for the police stated: ‘Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape. ‘A 19 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. ‘A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. ‘Both men have since been released on police bail.’ The alleged rape took place on Friday night, and the alleged victim contacted officers hours later before filing a formal complaint. It is not known whether the club has suspended their two players, but a spokesman for the unnamed team has said: ‘As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the football club will not be making further comment at this stage.’
