A gunfight erupted in the Watergam area of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, resulting in the death of two suspected terrorists. The encounter took place after security forces launched a cordon and search operation following intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the area. Two security personnel, a police officer and an army jawan, sustained injuries during the gunfight.
Inspector General of Police, VK Birdi, confirmed the deaths of the two terrorists. “Two bodies are seen at the encounter site. Both the terrorists have been killed. Their identity is yet to be ascertained,” he stated.
The encounter occurred just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident comes amidst heightened security measures in the region following multiple encounters between security forces and terrorists in recent months. Last week, Prime Minister Modi chaired a review meeting on the terrorist situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where he was briefed by Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the steps being taken to combat terrorism.
This latest encounter echoes a similar incident that occurred in Nihama Kakapora village in Jammu and Kashmir a few weeks ago, where two militants were killed. The deceased militants were identified as residents of Kakapora in Pulwama and commanders of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a terrorist organization. That incident took place a day before the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections.
The identities of the terrorists killed in Wednesday’s encounter are yet to be confirmed.
