Typhoon Yagi Impacts Macao: Fireworks Displays Postponed, Tourists Advised to Stay Informed

Macao is currently experiencing the effects of Typhoon Yagi, with the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issuing Typhoon Signal No. 3. Due to the unstable weather conditions, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) is urging visitors to stay informed about the latest updates through official channels.

To ensure the safety of both visitors and residents, MGTO has taken several proactive steps. Tourist Information counters across the city are displaying typhoon information, and four telecommunication companies are sending mobile messages containing civil protection information to both visitors in Macao and Macao residents traveling abroad. For any inquiries or assistance during this time, the 24-hour Tourism Hotline (2833 3000) is available.

The uncertain weather has unfortunately led to the postponement of the first two fireworks displays of the 32nd Macau International Fireworks Display Contest, originally scheduled for September 7th. The Fireworks Carnival, which was set to accompany the displays, has also been delayed. Updated dates for these events will be announced once weather conditions improve.

In the event that Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher is raised, public transportation services will be suspended, and MGTO’s Tourist Information counters will temporarily close. The Macao Grand Prix Museum and the Ritz Building will also be shut down during this time. For safety reasons, outdoor installations from the “Stay Chill, Play Cool – Macao!” project will be taken down, and the Stay Chill Macao Market will be cancelled.

MGTO has already issued reminders to tourism businesses in the area, urging them to prepare contingency plans for dealing with typhoon-related disruptions. Hotels have been instructed to display notices about the typhoon and transport changes in visible areas to keep guests informed. Visitors are encouraged to regularly check weather updates and stay informed about transportation services so they can adjust their travel plans accordingly.

With the ongoing uncertainty, MGTO is working closely with the tourism industry to minimize the impact of the typhoon on travelers. The office is assisting visitors in adjusting their itineraries with as little disruption as possible while ensuring safety remains the top priority.
