Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers has triumphed over the New York Knicks’ Donte DiVincenzo to claim the NBA’s Most Improved Player award for the 2023-24 season. DiVincenzo, a Knicks hero, was ineligible for the honor due to a recent stipulation in the league’s rules. Despite averaging 15.5 points and setting a Knicks record with 283 3-pointers, DiVincenzo fell short of the requirement to play in at least 65 games with at least 20 minutes of playing time in each game. However, Jalen Brunson, another Knicks guard, received 11 votes, including three first-place tallies, to finish fifth in the voting.
Maxey’s stellar season was marked by remarkable statistics, including ranking 11th in the NBA for points per game and 20th for assists per contest. He also recorded three games where he scored at least 50 points, tying him for the most in the league. His 212 3-pointers were a new career high, an increase from the 160 he hit last season.
While the award may not provide solace for Maxey and the 76ers after feeling they were wronged in the final minute of their Game 2 loss to the Knicks, it serves as a testament to Maxey’s exceptional growth and a reminder that his team remains a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.
