The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the frontrunner to host the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) declined the offer. The BCCI cited scheduling conflicts, as they will be hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025.
The UAE boasts three world-class cricketing venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, making it a strong contender to host the tournament. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are also in the running, with the International Cricket Council (ICC) expected to make a final decision this week. The ICC had initially requested India to host the event but received a negative response.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) remains keen to host the tournament despite the current turmoil in their country. However, the UAE’s strong infrastructure and recent experience in hosting major cricket events have given them an edge.
In other news related to women’s cricket, Malaysia has been named the sole host of the 2025 Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup after Thailand withdrew from co-hosting the event. The tournament, which will be played across four venues, will feature 16 teams, including Samoa making their debut. Defending champions India will be grouped with West Indies, Sri Lanka, and hosts Malaysia. The event is scheduled to begin on January 18, 2025, and conclude with the final on February 2.
