Following the success of the rule implemented at the 2024 European Championship, UEFA has announced its extension to all competitions under its jurisdiction. The rule, which restricts communication with referees to team captains only, aims to facilitate clearer communication and curb player dissent.
During the tournament in Germany, referees were tasked with explaining key decisions to the team captain, who then became the sole player authorized to request clarification. Players disregarding these rules, exhibiting dissent, or acting disrespectfully towards referees were cautioned. In cases where the captain is a goalkeeper, teams are permitted to nominate an outfield player for this role.
UEFA managing director for refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, highlighted the positive impact of the rule in a recent media briefing. He stated that referees are providing information to captains, who in turn are responding positively. Rosetti further emphasized the benefits for other players, as they are less likely to approach referees, preventing unnecessary confrontation and mob scenes.
Rosetti acknowledged that some sanctions were imposed on players who disregarded the rule. While acknowledging this transitional phase, he revealed that national associations across Europe have expressed interest in adopting this approach.
UEFA’s three club competitions, the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League, are scheduled to commence next week with the new rule in effect. This move by UEFA demonstrates its commitment to improving communication and fostering a more respectful environment within the game.
