Bobi Wine, the prominent Ugandan opposition leader, was shot in the leg and seriously injured by security agents in a northern suburb of the capital Kampala on Tuesday. His party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), confirmed the incident and alleged an attempt on Wine’s life.
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has emerged as the most formidable opponent to President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for nearly 40 years. Wine’s popularity has grown significantly in recent years, particularly among younger Ugandans who yearn for change.
The NUP’s statement on the X platform (formerly Twitter) stated that security operatives had attacked Wine. Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango has yet to respond to Reuters’ request for comment on the incident.
The shooting of Bobi Wine has raised serious concerns about the political climate in Uganda. Many fear that the incident could escalate tensions between the government and the opposition, further jeopardizing the country’s democratic progress.
