UK Suspends Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Jordanian Citizens

The UK has officially suspended the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for Jordanian citizens, effective from September 10, 2024. This decision, announced by Jordan’s Foreign Ministry, marks a return to the traditional visa process for Jordanians wishing to travel to the UK.

The ETA system, introduced earlier this year, aimed to streamline visa procedures for Jordanian travelers. However, British authorities have cited repeated instances of “abuse and violations” of immigration and residency rules by some Jordanian travelers as the reason for discontinuing the system. Despite efforts by Jordanian officials to address these concerns, the UK’s decision to revert to the standard visa process remains in effect.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed ongoing discussions with British officials, hoping to reinstate the ETA system under revised terms and conditions. This suspension remains under review as both countries work towards solutions to prevent future violations.

In response to this development, the Jordanian government reiterated its commitment to improving the international ranking of the Jordanian passport. Since 2017, their efforts have resulted in a ten-point improvement in the Henley and Partners passport index, making travel easier for Jordanian citizens. The government aims to further enhance the passport’s global standing to expand travel opportunities for its citizens.

If you currently possess an ETA and meet specific requirements, you can still use it to enter the UK. These requirements include providing proof of a confirmed return or onward flight booking, ensuring your booking is made before your trip and cannot be modified after, and adhering to the previously confirmed travel dates. If your travel plans fall outside of these dates, your ETA will be canceled, and you will need to apply for a visa instead. Refunds for canceled ETAs are not available.

As the UK moves away from the ETA system for Jordanian travelers, both governments are collaborating on future solutions. Travelers are strongly advised to stay informed about any further updates on visa procedures and ensure that their documentation is in order before planning trips to the UK.
