Ukraine has deployed long-range ballistic missiles provided secretly by the United States, delivering strikes on a Russian military airfield in Crimea and Russian forces in another occupied area. The deployment marks the first time Ukraine has used these advanced weapons, providing a significant boost to its military capabilities.
Ukraine had been pleading for the long-range missiles, as they enable it to target Russian positions from a safer distance. Previously, Ukraine had received mid-range missiles from the U.S. with a shorter range of approximately 160 kilometers.
The U.S. has provided Ukraine with more of these long-range missiles in a new military aid package recently signed by President Joe Biden. The weapons are part of a $1 billion aid package, which also includes artillery and air defense systems.
The U.S. had initially resisted supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles due to concerns about escalation. However, it has now determined that providing these weapons is necessary to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. The deployment of the missiles aligns with Ukraine’s urgent need to address increasing Russian attacks and its acute shortage of artillery and air defense systems.
While Ukraine has not publicly acknowledged the deployment of the missiles, it has expressed gratitude for the new aid package and emphasized the importance of long-range capabilities for restoring peace. The use of these missiles underscores the evolving dynamics of the conflict and the ongoing efforts to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
