Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, painted a grim picture of the situation in eastern Ukraine on Sunday, calling it ‘difficult’ amidst Russia’s intensified offensive. While Syrskyi refrained from specifying the exact location of the main attack, both he and President Volodymyr Zelensky have indicated that Russian forces are targeting the strategically important city of Pokrovsk.
Syrskyi, who spent several days on the eastern front near Pokrovsk last week, described the fighting as ‘exceptionally tough’. He assured the public that all necessary decisions at all levels were being made without delay to address the challenging situation.
Since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia has managed to capture significant portions of eastern Ukraine, inching forward through heavy fighting. These gains come amidst a backdrop of Ukraine’s recent surprise incursion into Russia’s western Kursk region on August 6th. This incursion, apparently aimed at diverting Russian resources and strengthening Ukraine’s negotiating position, has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict.
The situation in eastern Ukraine remains tense and volatile, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in repelling the Russian advance.
