UN Tourism and FIA Partner to Boost Sustainable Sports Tourism

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have joined forces to propel Sports Tourism to new heights worldwide. This partnership, solidified through a recent Memorandum of Understanding, represents a significant milestone in their ongoing collaboration. It underscores their shared commitment to fostering sustainable approaches and maximizing the positive impacts of Sports Tourism on various destinations.

The agreement leverages the combined strengths and influence of both organizations to utilize premier sports events as catalysts for tourism growth, economic expansion, and sustainable development. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the immense potential of the sports and tourism intersection, stating, “The intersection of sports and tourism offers immense potential for sustainable development, economic growth, and the promotion of cultural exchange. Our partnership with the Affiliate Member FIA is a crucial step forward in realizing this potential.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, echoing the commitment to sustainability, said, “This partnership with UN Tourism is a testament to the FIA’s unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism and social responsibility. By aligning our global initiatives with UN Tourism’s mission, we are not only promoting responsible travel but also setting new benchmarks for sustainability across all FIA events.”

The partnership was officially formalized during an exciting Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend in Monza, Italy, with the MoU signed by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

This collaboration marks a continuation of a long-standing relationship. The FIA, an Affiliate Member of UNWTO for over four decades, has been a leading force in global motorsports and the promotion of sustainable tourism. Under the leadership of President Ben Sulayem, the Federation manages globally renowned racing events like Formula 1, which attract millions of international spectators and significantly boost local tourism economies.

In recognition of his dedication to sustainable tourism, President Ben Sulayem has been appointed as UNWTO’s Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism under the category of “Sport”. This role underscores his commitment to integrating sustainability into motorsport events and activities, supporting initiatives that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhancing the global tourism landscape. President Ben Sulayem stated, “I am honored on behalf of the FIA to be appointed as an UN Tourism Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism. The FIA has been a trendsetter in this field across sport, mobility and tourism. Together with our partners at UN Tourism, I will ensure that the federation continues to focus on delivering vital sustainability solutions for all.”

This partnership between UNWTO and the FIA is poised to deepen the understanding of the burgeoning potential of Sports Tourism. Currently valued at approximately $609 billion and experiencing an impressive annual growth rate of 17.5%, Sports Tourism is rapidly becoming one of the most dynamic niches in the tourism industry. It effectively bridges the tourism and sports industries, making significant contributions to economic diversification and social development through its cultural and societal impacts.

Looking ahead, the third World Sports Tourism Congress, scheduled for November 28-29, 2024, in Madrid, Spain, promises to be a pivotal event for furthering these discussions. The FIA is set to play a key role, leveraging its extensive expertise to contribute to discussions about sustainability, economic progress, and global cooperation within the realm of Sports Tourism.
