Unifor members at General Motors’ CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly plants in Ingersoll, Ontario, have secured a significant victory with the ratification of a new two-year collective agreement. The new contract, which was overwhelmingly approved by 95.7% of Unifor Local 88 members representing over 1,300 workers, delivers substantial wage increases and enhanced income security provisions.
Production workers at the CAMI Assembly plant, responsible for building the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400, will receive a 15% wage increase over the contract’s duration. Skilled trades workers at both the assembly and battery assembly facilities, who assemble the company’s Ultium battery modules, will see an even larger pay bump of 20.25%.
The agreement, which expires on September 20, 2026, goes beyond wage gains. It also addresses the ongoing transition from gas-powered to electric vehicles by implementing improved income security measures to protect workers during this shift.
Mike Van Boekel, Unifor CAMI Plant Chairperson, emphasized the importance of the contract, stating that CAMI workers have been at the forefront of the EV transition and the bargaining committee was committed to securing the necessary wage increases, pension improvements, and income security measures to ensure their well-being during this evolution and position them for future success.
The ratification of this contract marks a significant step in the ongoing labor negotiations between Unifor and General Motors in Canada. It demonstrates the union’s commitment to securing fair wages, benefits, and job security for its members during a period of rapid technological change and economic uncertainty.
