Unifor Reaches Tentative Agreement with General Motors in Canada

Unifor, the Canadian labor union, announced on Wednesday that it has reached a tentative collective agreement with General Motors (GM) for its over 1,300 members at the company’s CAMI Assembly and Battery Assembly facilities in Ingersoll, Ontario.

The details of this tentative agreement will be presented to union members at a meeting scheduled for September 22nd. Mike Van Boekel, a Unifor member, stated that the union’s members had clear goals heading into negotiations, and he believes this tentative agreement reflects those goals.

This agreement arrives just one day after the union extended the negotiation deadline with GM, which was originally set to expire on Tuesday night. The union was seeking improvements in wages, pensions, and job security as part of the new agreement. Last month, 97% of Unifor Local 88 members voted in support of strike action if an agreement was not reached.

The CAMI Assembly plant workers are responsible for building the Chevrolet BrightDrop EV 600 and EV 400, while the battery assembly facility workers assemble the company’s Ultium battery modules.

This agreement signifies a positive step forward for both Unifor and General Motors in Canada, demonstrating a commitment to finding common ground on critical issues like wages, pensions, and job security. The outcome of the September 22nd meeting will determine the final fate of this tentative agreement and its impact on the workers involved.
