The Confédération des syndicats nationaux, a Quebec-based union, has filed an application with the Administrative Labour Tribunal to represent 200 employees at Amazon’s DXT4 warehouse in Laval. The union, which represents 330,000 workers across various industries, seeks to ensure that the union cards signed by the warehouse workers represent a majority of the facility’s staff. If the tribunal determines that the required threshold has been met, the union will be certified as the representative for all employees covered by the application.
Earlier this month, Unifor, another union, filed applications to represent workers at two Amazon warehouses in British Columbia. However, the applications were subsequently withdrawn due to concerns about a potentially inflated employee count provided by Amazon.
The union’s effort to organize Amazon workers reflects the growing trend of labor unions seeking to represent employees in the e-commerce sector. Amazon, as the dominant player in this industry, has faced scrutiny over its labor practices, including allegations of low wages, inadequate benefits, and a culture of fear and intimidation.
