In an effort to enhance payment services for international travelers visiting China, UnionPay International, supported by Bank of China Singapore Branch (BOCSG) and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Singapore Branch (ICBCSG), hosted ‘Project Excellence Singapore’ on May 12, 2024, at the China Cultural Centre. This event was organized by China Express Travel(s) Pte Ltd and is part of UnionPay’s broader ‘Project Excellence 2024’ initiative.
Over 240 attendees gathered to learn about the ease and benefits of using UnionPay cards and UnionPay-enabled e-wallets while traveling within China. The event emphasized the increasing prevalence of cashless transactions in China and showcased how UnionPay’s services can simplify the payment process for international visitors.
The event featured a presentation by Professor Li Liang Yi, entitled ‘World Cultural Heritage in China.’ Professor Li’s insights, gained through his long-standing collaboration with the China Cultural Centre and Tourism Office, provided attendees with a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and its significance in tourism.
Additionally, Mr. Huiming Cai, General Manager of UnionPay International Southeast Asia, highlighted convenient payment solutions for China travel. These solutions include apps that enable scanning with UnionPay QR Codes, such as BOC Mobile Banking, DBS PayLah!, DCS Cards, Huawei Pay, ICBC Mobile Banking, OCBC Digital App, and Nestia.
Representatives from BOCSG and ICBCSG further elaborated on the ease and convenience of banking in China. Mr. Xiao Jianghua, Director of the China Cultural Centre, expressed his honor in hosting the event and emphasized the importance of facilitating knowledge exchange between China and Singapore.
Ms. Liu Qin, General Manager & Head, Card Centre, Bank of China Singapore Branch, highlighted the bank’s commitment to ‘Project Excellence 2024’ through its recent launch of the first Splendor Plus Credit and Debit Card in Southeast Asia. Mr. Gao Weiran, Head of Credit Card Department, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Singapore Branch, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collaboration’s role in fostering tourism and business exchanges between China and Singapore.
Mr. Huiming Cai, General Manager, UnionPay International Southeast Asia, expressed his hope that the event would amplify ‘Project Excellence’ efforts in Singapore. He emphasized the importance of empowering travelers with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate China confidently.

Other Singapore-based initiatives tied to ‘Project Excellence 2024’ include a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BOCSG and the inaugural launch of the UnionPay Splendor Plus Credit and Debit Card in Southeast Asia.
