Exfoliation: The Key to a Radiant Summer Glow
As the summer heat approaches, the quest for a golden tan intensifies. However, dry skin can often thwart our tanning efforts, leaving us with an uneven and lackluster bronze. Fortunately, there’s a simple yet seemingly “counterintuitive” solution: regular exfoliation.
Experts at Net-a-Porter advocate for exfoliating twice weekly to achieve a radiant, tan-ready complexion. This process removes dead skin cells, allowing skincare products to penetrate deeper and work more effectively. Chemical exfoliants, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), are highly recommended for their ability to exfoliate without being too harsh on the skin.
For those with sensitive skin, gentler alternatives like reusable cotton pads or mesh towels can be equally effective. To prevent irritation, use a square of cotton gauze for gentle exfoliation on the face.
To maintain your tan throughout the season, tanning expert Kimberley Nkosi recommends exfoliating every two to three days. Contrary to common belief, exfoliation will not diminish your tan; instead, it enhances the natural skin finish.
“It sounds counterintuitive, but it won’t make your tan disappear. In fact, the more you exfoliate, the better your natural skin finish will be,” says Nkosi.
Pay particular attention to areas prone to dry skin buildup, such as elbows, knees, and ankles. If exfoliation causes redness, try soaking in a warm bath with Epsom salts. The salts will gently exfoliate and promote cell turnover.
Milk baths also offer exfoliating benefits and can improve the texture of rough, dry skin. Dr. Barbara Sturm recommends adding a gallon of full-fat milk to your bathwater, explaining: “It makes your skin feel so soft and very hydrated.”
By incorporating regular exfoliation into your skincare routine, you can effectively combat dry skin, promote a more even tan, and achieve a radiant, summer-ready glow.
