Unlocking Data-Driven Decisions for Sustainable Tourism in the Pacific

The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) and Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) have joined forces to elevate data excellence in driving sustainable tourism development in the Pacific region. Through a week-long workshop and collaborative initiatives, both organizations aim to harness the power of data to make informed decisions and shape the future of tourism in the Pacific. The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable tourism through data-driven strategies, including initiatives such as the International Visitor Survey (IVS), Business Confidence Index (BCI), and Community Attitude Survey (CAS) reports. Papua New Guinea, alongside nine other countries in the Pacific region, is actively involved in the PTDI project, supported by funding from the New Zealand Government. Through collaborative efforts, SPTO and PNGTPA aim to set industry standards, monitor tourism performance, and drive sustainable development across the region. Hosted in Port Moresby, the week-long workshop drew the participation of fifteen individuals from PNGTPA, equipped with tools and knowledge to conduct insightful research within Papua New Guinea’s tourism sector. Participants lauded the workshop for enhancing their skills in data analysis and fostering collaboration among industry stakeholders. Claire Kupo, Executive Manager Corporate Affairs Division at PNGTPA, emphasized the pivotal role of data in informed decision-making and sustainable tourism development. Christopher Cocker, CEO of SPTO, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative potential of data collaboration in shaping a vibrant and sustainable tourism future for the Pacific. SPTO reaffirms its dedication to advancing sustainable tourism development in Papua New Guinea and the broader Pacific region. Through workshops, capacity-building initiatives, and collaborations with local partners, SPTO strives to empower communities, promote responsible tourism practices, and safeguard the region’s natural and cultural heritage. The partnership between SPTO and PNGTPA heralds a new era of data-driven decision-making and sustainable tourism development in the Pacific. By leveraging the power of data, both organizations are poised to address key challenges, seize opportunities, and shape a resilient and vibrant tourism landscape for generations to come.
