Uruguay kicked off their Copa America 2024 campaign with a resounding 3-1 victory over Panama in a Group C clash held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Sunday. The match saw Uruguay dominate from the start, taking the lead in the 16th minute through a well-placed shot from Maximiliano Araujo, which found the top corner of the net.
La Celeste held onto their advantage throughout the first half and into the second, before finally doubling their lead in the 85th minute. Darwin Nunez, who has been in impressive form for Uruguay recently, added his name to the scoresheet with a clinical finish, netting his ninth international goal in his last six appearances.
Uruguay wasn’t done yet, and they sealed their victory in dramatic fashion during stoppage time. Matias Vina expertly headed home a cross delivered by Nicolas de la Cruz to make it 3-0. While Panama did manage to pull a goal back in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time through Michael Amir Murillo’s curling effort, it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Uruguay secured a comfortable win.
The victory will give Uruguay a strong start in their Copa America campaign, while Panama will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
