US Ambassador: India Better Than America in Many Ways, Democracy Thriving

US Ambassador Dismisses Concerns, Hails Indian Democracy

United States Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has dismissed concerns about the state of democracy in India, asserting that the country surpasses the United States in several aspects.

In a speech at an event organized by the Council on Foreign Relations in New Delhi, Garcetti expressed confidence in India’s democratic future, stating, “10 years from now, India is going to be a vibrant democracy as it is today in terms of free and fair elections.”

Addressing concerns over the status of democracy in India, Garcetti highlighted the country’s efforts to ensure the accessibility of voting. He recounted the example of transporting voting machines to remote mountainous areas to facilitate voting for a single individual, demonstrating India’s commitment to inclusivity.

Garcetti also praised India’s stringent measures to combat electoral malpractices, including checking for cash distribution during elections. He acknowledged that India’s practices in this regard are superior to those in certain US cities.

While acknowledging areas of concern, Garcetti emphasized the importance of a comprehensive relationship with India, transcending a narrow focus on specific issues. He stated, “I just disagree that we don’t speak out about them.” However, he stressed the value of a broader partnership, recognizing the common ground shared between the two countries.

Garcetti further highlighted the significance of India’s regional governments in contributing to the country’s democratic framework. He acknowledged that opposition parties control several state governments, providing a platform for diverse political perspectives.

Expressing optimism about the future of India-US relations, Garcetti asserted, “I 100 percent believe we can trust this relationship. It’s going to be one of the defining relationships of the 21st century, the US and India together.”
