US Envoy Praises India’s Democracy, Highlights Areas for Improvement

US Ambassador Eric Garcetti lauded India’s democracy at an event on Friday, expressing confidence in its continued vitality. He remarked that “10 years from now, India is going to be a vibrant democracy as it is today in terms of free and fair elections.”

Garcetti highlighted India’s electoral practices, particularly the deployment of personnel to prevent cash distribution during elections. He stated, “I’ve been impressed with certain things they do that are better than us.”

However, Garcetti also acknowledged areas where India could enhance its democracy. He noted the limited voting radius of two kilometers, which can pose challenges for citizens living in remote locations.

Addressing concerns about the status of democracy in India, Garcetti said, “There’s things that probably are worse and there’s things that are better.” He emphasized that the US monitors political developments and voices its concerns when necessary.

Garcetti stressed the positive public perception of the US in India, stating, “They [Indians] like us more than we [Americans] like ourselves.” He added that Poland is the only country that comes close to matching this level of affinity.

Garcetti emphasized the importance of the US-India relationship, describing it as “one of the defining relationships of the 21st century.” He expressed belief in the resilience of India’s democracy and its ability to overcome challenges.
