Ukrainian officials expressed gratitude on Wednesday for a new tranche of US military aid, providing a vital lifeline to Kyiv’s armed forces in their protracted war with Russia, which has spanned over two years. The fresh supplies are expected to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, despite not having an immediate impact on the battlefield. Ukrainian troops have faced severe shortages of artillery shells and air defense systems, as political disagreements in Washington delayed the aid for months. This respite has allowed Russian forces to gain ground in parts of eastern Ukraine by sheer force of manpower and firepower, leading to a largely attritional conflict. The US decision to provide aid coincides with intensified Russian bombardment of the Kharkiv region and Ukrainian drone strikes on fuel and energy facilities within Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his appreciation for the US Senate’s approval of a $61 billion aid package. He emphasized the crucial importance of Ukraine’s long-range capabilities, artillery, and air defense for restoring peace. During the night, Russian S-300 missiles struck Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and the town of Zolochiv in the Kharkiv region, without causing any casualties. Additionally, a missile hit the southern city of Odesa, injuring one woman. Conversely, Ukrainian drones targeted Russian infrastructure, setting two energy facilities ablaze in the western Smolensk region. The regional head confirmed the attack but did not provide specific details. Russia’s defense ministry reported shooting down eight drones overnight in various regions.
