US Olympic Team Trials: Top Performers and Qualification Chances

Swimming

Katie Ledecky, the reigning Olympic champion in the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyles, is expected to make the team again. The top two finishers in the 100m and 200m freestyles will also earn spots.

Track and Field

The U.S. team in track and field could be one of the strongest ever. Noah Lyles, Sha’Carri Richardson, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and Athing Mu are all expected to make the team in multiple events. The U.S. has a reigning Olympic or world medalist in nearly every event on the track, and 15 of the 37 U.S. golds at the Tokyo Games came in swimming.

Gymnastics

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team could have three past Olympic all-around champions competing for spots on the team: Tokyo gold medalist Suni Lee, Rio gold medalist Simone Biles, and London gold medalist Gabby Douglas. The men’s field is also expected to be strong, with three past U.S. all-around champions and two more men who won individual medals at the 2023 Worlds.

Other Sports

In other sports, the U.S. has qualified an artistic swimming team to the Olympics for the first time since 2008. Open-water swimmers Mariah Denigan and Ivan Puskovitch also earned spots in Paris. The U.S. also has a chance to qualify a third men’s spot in weightlifting via a last-chance global qualifier in May.
