The 2024 US Open has shaken up the ATP and WTA rankings, with several players making significant leaps. Taylor Fritz, the men’s runner-up, returned to the top 10, landing at No. 7. Meanwhile, women’s runner-up Jessica Pegula moved up to No. 3 in the WTA rankings, a new career high. The impressive performance by semifinalist Emma Navarro also earned her a career-best ranking at No. 8.
On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner, the champion, further solidified his position as the ATP’s No. 1, a title he has held since June. Sinner defeated Fritz in a thrilling final, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, further increasing his lead in the rankings. In the women’s tournament, Aryna Sabalenka remained at No. 2 in the WTA, trailing only Iga Swiatek, who was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Pegula.
Sabalenka, the US Open champion, has already won two Grand Slams this year, with the Australian Open title being her other victory. However, her focus remains on personal improvement, not just the rankings. “I mean, I’m not trying to focus on ranking, to be honest. Not like I’m checking where I’m going to be after the tournament,” Sabalenka said after her victory over Pegula. “I’m just trying to focus on myself, and I know that if (at) each tournament I’ll be able to play my best tennis… I’ll be able to become world No. 1 again. So my focus is on myself, on improving myself as a player and as a person. Hopefully one day I’ll see myself (back) on the top of the ranking.”
Last year’s champions at Flushing Meadows, Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic, experienced setbacks. Gauff fell from No. 3 to No. 6 after being knocked out in the fourth round by Navarro. Djokovic slid from No. 2 to No. 4 after losing in the third round to Alexei Popyrin.
The men’s top 10 now sees Alexander Zverev at No. 2, followed by Carlos Alcaraz at No. 3. Daniil Medvedev remained at No. 5 and Andrey Rublev held onto No. 6, with Fritz moving up five spots to No. 7.
Britain’s Jack Draper had a breakthrough tournament, reaching his first Grand Slam semifinal. This propelled him from No. 25 to a career-best No. 20. In the women’s rankings, Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini maintained their positions at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Zheng Qinwen, the Olympic gold medalist, stayed at No. 7, with Navarro’s impressive run taking her up from No. 13 to No. 8.
