Several US personnel were injured in a rocket attack on the Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq on Monday, August 5, officials reported. The attack, the latest targeting the base, marks a significant escalation in regional tensions, particularly with an anticipated Iranian counterattack on Israel.
A US defense spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating, “There was a suspected rocket attack today against US and coalition forces.” They added, “Initial indications are that several US personnel were injured.” Base personnel are conducting a post-attack damage assessment, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
The White House reported that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed on the incident. “They discussed the steps we are taking to defend our forces and respond to any attack against our personnel in a manner and place of our choosing,” a statement read. President Biden also took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the attack and the broader situation in the Middle East.
Earlier on Monday, Iraqi security officials confirmed the attack, although no group has claimed responsibility. An Iraqi military source indicated that multiple rockets were fired at the base, with some landing inside the facility and another striking a nearby village without causing damage. A commander from a pro-Iran armed group told AFP that at least two rockets targeted the base, though they did not specify who was responsible.
The latest attack comes amidst growing concerns of potential retaliation by Iran and its allies against Israel, following the recent killing of key Hamas and Hezbollah figures in strikes attributed to or claimed by Israel. These developments have significantly heightened tensions in the region, making the situation extremely volatile.
