In the realm of global education, Indian students are increasingly seeking opportunities beyond their borders, with a marked preference for the United States. According to a comprehensive study conducted by Oxford International’s Student Global Mobility Index (SGMI), the US emerged as the top choice for Indian students, garnering an overwhelming majority of 69% among respondents. This preference for the US overshadowed other renowned education hubs such as the UK (54%), Canada (43%), and Australia (27%), despite concerns about affordability, safety, and security.
The study delved into the motivations driving Indian students’ choice of the US, revealing a clear preference for the esteemed reputation and high quality of education offered by American universities. A significant 45% of respondents cited the quality of education, while 42% emphasized the reputation of universities as decisive factors in selecting the US.
The study also highlighted the diverse motivations that influence students’ decisions based on their destination of choice. While the UK attracts students with its educational quality (50%) and university reputation (61%), Canada appeals to those seeking to combine work and study.
Familial guidance emerged as a significant factor in shaping Indian students’ decisions, with approximately 71% citing parents or guardians as primary influencers. Close friends also played an influential role, with 44% of Indian students acknowledging their impact on decision-making.
These findings underscore the multifaceted nature of Indian students’ pursuit of education abroad, which is influenced by a complex interplay of factors ranging from academic reputation to familial guidance. As the educational landscape continues to evolve, these insights offer valuable perspectives on the evolving dynamics of global student mobility.
