The United States Senate has given its approval to a substantial aid package worth $61 billion that is intended for Ukraine. President Joe Biden has pledged to swiftly provide new weapon systems to the conflict zone amidst Russia’s military advances. As part of a more extensive $95 billion assistance package that also encompasses aid to allies such as Israel and Taiwan, this package was approved by the Senate with wide bipartisan support.
This action came after months of delay in Capitol Hill, where certain House Republicans have questioned providing funding to Ukraine in its fight against Russian forces. Nevertheless, the delay has allowed Russia to intensify its offensive against the Ukrainian military, which has been facing difficulties on the battlefield.
In response to the US approving the long-delayed Ukraine aid package, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the Senate, specifically mentioning Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for their significant leadership in advancing this bipartisan legislation. He also acknowledged the support of all US Senators who voted in favor of this aid, regardless of their political affiliation.
President Zelenskyy further expressed his appreciation for President Biden’s support and stated that he eagerly awaits the bill’s signing and the subsequent military aid package, which should reflect the resolute stance that has consistently been present in their discussions. He emphasized that Ukraine’s long-range capabilities, artillery, and air defense systems are indispensable for swiftly restoring a just and peaceful resolution.
