The United States’ commitment to Taiwan’s defense has come under fire after a Pentagon Inspector General report revealed the delivery of moldy body armor and outdated equipment, raising serious concerns about America’s reliability as a security partner. Senator Joni Ernst, a prominent Republican senator, has demanded answers from the Biden administration regarding this alarming situation. Ernst, the fourth-ranking Republican in the Senate, expressed her deep concern about the delivery of faulty equipment to Taiwan, emphasizing that “Delivering outdated and damaged military equipment to Taiwan is no way to treat a friend.” She further stated that “undercutting our partners and emboldening adversaries has become a staple of the Biden-Harris foreign policy doctrine.”
The report revealed that over 340 pallets of equipment, including more than 3,000 mildewed body armor plates and 500 wet and moldy tactical vests, were sent to Taiwan. The equipment, which had been stored at Travis Air Force Base in California, suffered water damage due to inadequate storage facilities and prolonged exposure to the elements. Images of the moldy equipment, obtained by the American Institute in Taiwan, paint a stark picture of the state of the military supplies delivered to Taiwan.
The inspector general’s report concluded that the Pentagon failed to adhere to guidelines for delivering equipment through the presidential drawdown authority, which allows the US to send equipment from its current stockpiles. This failure resulted in the delivery of unusable equipment to Taiwan, potentially jeopardizing its defense capabilities. The report also revealed that the shipment included expired ammunition and poorly packaged machine guns, further raising concerns about the quality control and oversight of the equipment delivery.
Senator Ernst has demanded answers regarding the breakdown in communication and oversight that led to this debacle. She has specifically requested information on the steps taken to clarify responsibilities for such shipments, improve oversight, and expedite the replacement of damaged equipment. She also sought clarification on the funding source for the $730,000 spent to rectify the situation.
