US State Department Highlights Human Rights Abuses in Manipur, Modi Condemns

The US State Department’s recent report on human rights uncovered severe abuses in Manipur, fueled by ethnic clashes between Kuki and Meitei groups. The report documents fatalities exceeding 175 and over 60,000 displaced individuals between May and November. Moreover, accounts from activists and journalists detailed violence, including armed conflict, sexual assaults, and destruction of property.

In response, Prime Minister Modi condemned the incidents and urged swift action. However, local human rights organizations and affected communities criticized the government’s delayed intervention and humanitarian assistance. The United Nations also issued a call for enhanced relief efforts, investigations, accountability, and reconciliation among affected communities.

Further, the State Department report raised concerns over disinformation campaigns targeting civil society organizations, religious minorities, and political opponents. It also highlighted an incident involving tax authorities raiding the offices of the British Broadcasting Corporation, leading to equipment seizures from non-financial personnel.

While the report acknowledges some positive developments in freedom of expression and assembly, it also noted ongoing investigations into journalists and human rights activists. These developments have drawn criticism from the Indian government, which has defended its internal affairs and criticized foreign interference.
