US Stocks Climb Higher, Dow Jones Up 50 Points

U.S. stock markets opened strong on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing over 50 points. The gains were broad-based, with the NASDAQ Composite rising by 0.24% to close at 18,016.58, and the S&P 500 index gaining 0.08% to end the day at 5,723.30.

The materials sector led the charge, with shares jumping 1.1% on the day. In contrast, real estate shares experienced a decline of 0.5%.

Among the headline news, AutoZone, Inc. (AZO) reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. The company posted earnings per share of $51.58, falling short of analysts’ expectations of $53.53. Quarterly revenue of $6.205 billion, a 9.0% year-over-year increase, also missed the analyst consensus of $6.221 billion.

Spain’s IBEX 35 index fell 0.2%, while London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.1%. The Ifo Business Climate indicator for Germany fell to 85.4 in September, down from 86.6 in the previous month.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed higher on Tuesday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.57%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index jumped 4.13%, China’s Shanghai Composite Index climbed 4.15%, and India’s BSE Sensex rose 0.02%. The au Jibun Bank Flash Japan composite PMI declined to 52.5 in September, compared to a final reading of 52.9 in August.

Economics

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index rose by 5.9% year-over-year in July, down from a 6.5% increase in the previous month. The FHFA house prices index rose 0.1% in July, compared to market estimates of a 0.2% increase.
