The Department of Tourism in Uttar Pradesh has announced ambitious plans to enhance Sankisa, a significant Buddhist landmark located in the Farrukhabad district. With an investment of nearly Rs 20 crore, the department aims to upgrade the Buddha Vihar with new amenities, including a perimeter wall, improved water systems, visitor shelters, enhanced lighting, sanitary facilities, rest areas, and a spacious passenger hall.
Furthermore, a new Buddhist museum spanning approximately 2.25 acres is planned, with an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore. The museum will serve as an educational and cultural hub, enriching the visitor experience.
Jaiveer Singh, the Minister of Tourism and Culture for Uttar Pradesh, highlighted the historical significance of Sankisa, stating that Lord Buddha made his divine descent to the site after delivering teachings to his mother in Devlok. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to elevating Sankisa to a world-class tourist destination with state-of-the-art amenities.
Minister Singh underscored the economic potential of developing Sankisa. He emphasized the importance of the Buddhist circuit in Uttar Pradesh, which comprises six significant Buddhist sites: Kapilvastu, Kaushambi, Kushinagar, Shravasti, Sankisa, and Sarnath. He believes that attracting foreign Buddhist followers to Sankisa will boost the local economy and create new job opportunities.
The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department aims to attract international visitors by enhancing tourist facilities across state-owned tourist spots, ultimately contributing to the state’s overall revenue generation. The government’s focus on upgrading these sites reflects a commitment to promoting tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
