A sub-inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police has been suspended after an audio recording of him demanding potatoes as a bribe to settle a case went viral on social media. The incident occurred in Kannauj, where Sub-Inspector Ramkripal, in-charge of Chapunna outpost of Saurikh police station, was allegedly attempting to extort a bribe.
According to a report by news agency PTI, Additional Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar revealed that a report was filed by the Circle Officer of Chhibramau regarding the alleged bribe attempt. The audio recording, which has since spread widely online, captures a conversation where an individual informs Ramkripal that he can only provide two kilograms of potatoes for the case settlement.
Ramkripal, however, expresses dissatisfaction, stating that a deal for five kilograms of potatoes had been previously agreed upon. The individual, citing poor income from his business, reiterates his inability to meet the sub-inspector’s demand and offers only two kilograms. Ramkripal insists on receiving the remaining three kilograms at a later time.
Taking prompt action, Kannauj Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Anand has suspended Ramkripal with immediate effect. A preliminary investigation into the matter has been assigned to the Circle Officer (City) Kamlesh Kumar to determine further departmental action. The incident highlights a disturbing trend of corruption within the Indian law enforcement system and underscores the need for increased accountability and transparency.
