Uttarakhand Mandates Dustbins in Vehicles to Combat Littering During Chardham Yatra

In an effort to combat the issue of littering and maintain the state’s natural cleanliness, the Uttarakhand government has implemented a new rule requiring all vehicles entering the state to have dustbins and garbage bags installed. This measure, announced on Thursday, will take effect immediately and is particularly focused on the upcoming Chardham Yatra, a pilgrimage that draws millions of devotees each year.

Chief Secretary Radha Raturi stated that trip cards will only be issued to vehicles that comply with the new rule, ensuring that all entering vehicles are equipped with proper waste disposal mechanisms. The Uttarakhand State Transport Department has sent letters to neighboring states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, informing them of the mandatory requirement.

Violators will face fines and strict enforcement will be in place to ensure compliance. All vehicles entering Uttarakhand will be subject to inspection and those found without dustbins or garbage bags will be penalized. The Chief Secretary emphasized that this regulation applies to not only the general public but also tour operators, travel agencies, and drivers, urging them to be aware of and comply with the new rule.

Raturi highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in protecting Uttarakhand’s environment, stating that the state’s tourism industry relies on its natural beauty and cleanliness. ‘Uttarakhand is a tourist state. Maintaining the natural cleanliness of the state and protecting its environment is the collective responsibility of its residents as well as lakhs of tourists and devotees who visit the state every year,’ she said.

This initiative follows similar efforts in other states like Goa, where the Chief Minister has announced plans to amend existing legislation to impose stricter penalties on vehicles caught illegally dumping garbage, including revoking permits for a year. The Uttarakhand government’s move signifies a proactive approach towards environmental protection and aims to instill a sense of responsibility among visitors and residents alike.
