Uttarakhand Villages Shine at National Tourism Awards

The scenic state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the Himalayas, is celebrating a remarkable achievement. Four of its villages have been selected for the prestigious ‘Best Tourism Village’ award by the Union Ministry of Tourism. This accolade, awarded on International Tourism Day, recognizes outstanding efforts in enhancing rural tourism and fostering sustainability within the state.

The winning villages include Jakhol and Harshil in Uttarkashi, Seemant Gunji in Pithoragarh, and Soupi in Nainital. Each village boasts unique attractions that have earned them this national recognition. Jakhol stands out for its adventurous offerings, while Harshil and Seemant Gunji captivate visitors with their vibrant village life. Soupi, on the other hand, enchants tourists with its focus on agricultural tourism.

The ‘Best Tourism Village’ award is a yearly competition organized by the Tourism Ministry. It aims to highlight villages across India that excel in preserving their cultural and natural heritage. These villages also prioritize community-based values, ensuring the well-being of their residents and fostering economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed immense pride in the achievements of the selected villages. He commended the villagers for their dedication and hard work in achieving this distinction. Emphasizing the pivotal role of the local population in tourism development, he stated that while the state government is actively promoting Uttarakhand as a prime tourist destination through various initiatives, true progress depends on the collaboration of its residents.

This recognition further solidifies Uttarakhand’s position as a thriving tourism destination. Known as Devbhoomi, or the land of gods, the state offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, ancient temples, and vibrant cultural heritage. The government is actively promoting tourism development in both the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, further enhancing the state’s appeal to travelers worldwide.

Last year, Biswanath Ghat in Assam’s Sonitpur district received the ‘Best Tourism Village’ award, demonstrating the government’s commitment to recognizing and promoting tourism excellence across India. The selection of these four Uttarakhand villages highlights the diverse and captivating offerings of rural India, further encouraging exploration and appreciation of the country’s rich heritage and cultural tapestry.
